Jaxx Milk Chocolate coated Crunches

April 12th, 2011 by Terry

Yesterday I received an email from Michelle on behalf of Jaxx Mouthy Chocolate, a brand new product coming to the UK and Ireland. She offered me their range of three products and I was more than happy to try something new, and the package only took a day to arrive! So here’s a review of what I suppose is their flagship, regular milk chocolate Crunches.

Michelle also provided me with Jaxx’s press release which says that they are aiming for the ‘tween-teen’ market, which is sadly nowadays a bit younger than me, and that resonated a little bit when I opened the package. I was greeted with a chocolate with a mouth photoshopped onto it, shouting that ‘Those other sweets are tragic. EAT ME!’ Now it is branded as ‘mouthy chocolate’ and aimed at a 10-18 audience, so while I prefer my chocolate brands to not shout in my face, I can see where they’re going with this.

Launching within Londis, Budgens, Scotmid and Martin McColl, these aren’t quite as widely available as I had hoped. I was hoping to see an ASDA or Tesco, though they do say distribution is ‘growing fast’, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I’ll actually be seeing these in a local supermarket one day. They also come in 50g packs rather than the usual 35g that you get with most chocolates. This is resonated with the price, launching at 69p per pack which is described as a ‘Try Me’ promotion, insinuating that the price will normally be higher than that.

When the pack is opened and poured out, that’s what you get. The crunches are quite large, about the size of the tip of my middle finger, and thick too. What they basically are, are a combination of whey powder and wheat flour covered in milk chocolate, which doesn’t sound too appetising when I put it like that, but these are actually almost surprisingly quite good. It’s not wafery, but it’s well…crunchy and almost biscuity, the chocolate is quite a thin layer and doesn’t carry much of a taste, but the crunch has a nice taste to it and there’s plenty there to fill you up as a snack.

Overall these left a good impression, clearly not aimed at me but what I care about is the taste and it delivers where it counts, after all you could have the best packaging around but if your product sucks people won’t buy it again, Jaxx have shown here that they can attract an audience and keep them coming back, I only hope that the price point won’t be raised too far beyond what it is already.
