Galaxy Counters
2 days ago I received an email from Galaxy, or rather an agency acting on behalf of Galaxy, who asked me I wanted to sample a product they’re about to launch in stores. I’m a big fan of Galaxy chocolate so the opportunity couldn’t be turned down. I was sent some information sheets about the product – Galaxy Counters – which were supposedly around between the 1960s-1980s, so a bit before my time. They’re disc shaped pieces of Galaxy chocolate, and I suppose they’ve seen how well Cadbury did with the revival of the Wispa, so they’re going for a bit of nostalgia too.
After reading the blurb I sent an email back saying “hey, these sound a lot like Minstrels” and was told that basically, they are! Take away the hard outer shell of a Minstrel and this is what you get. It’s really quite a simple formula and from what I can tell is almost just a rebranding of Galaxy’s regular chocolate bars, they just take their milk chocolate and process them as discs instead of bars, and hey presto we have a new product on the market.
As you can see from the first picture, this came in a rather large bag, 130g to be exact. And just above are the contents of the bag. The packaging itself is quite nice, it’s the regular Galaxy look so it has various shades of brown with a simple image of what the Counters look like. As expected they do look like Minstrels without the shell, and are quite simply discs of milk chocolate.
As far as taste goes, they’re really very good. This isn’t surprising because, as I mentioned earlier, they’re Galaxy’s regular milk chocolate in disc form, so if you like a Galaxy bar then you’ll like this because it’s the same thing. Galaxy are going for a sharing vibe here, while you can get big versions of their bar it’s a little harder to share, here you can simply set a bag down and let people go nuts. These will have an RRP of £1.69 per bag and will be available from April.

There is no “supposedly” about Counters being available in the 60s and 70s – they were, in the white bag with the giraffe on it, and they survived to the present day in bags of Revels.
I (and many others) have been campaigning for the revival of Counters since the 90s. Rest assured, this is not a “new” product, or a new idea, but the long-awaited return of an old one.

For some reason, Terry, I thought you were an older choc fan! Anyway, for us children of the 70s, Galaxy Counters are our ambrosia. Snatched from our grasp in the 80s, we have hung on to the hope that one day, they will return to us. And they did! How on earth I managed to miss every single press release, despite working for a media company, I’ll never know. But today I spotted them in Tesco. It was like a Holy Grail moment! And people. they taste EXACTLY the same as they did when we were kids. Bring back the giraffe!

Oh happy, happy day. I have long mourned the loss of galaxy counters and their giraffe. Have just had first packet of the new ones, certainly up to scratch. Does anyone think they used to be smaller in the 70s though? Anyway well done galaxy, this time don’t take them away from us please!

Oh Yes!! I certainly remember these from as last back as 1967/8. They were (and still are)my very favourite chocolate. I was absolutely delighted when I saw them recently in Asda. All the old memories came flooding back and I’m afraid I bought up half their stock! Why did’nt they bring back the Giraffe though?

Yes. I can vouch for Jem’s love of Galaxy Counters (she is my better half!) as is the poor bread bin which is host to several packets at a time! Thanks ASDA and Galaxy!!! I am slightly younger than Jem and have only a very vague re-collection of them. NOT so now!!! Apparently if I were one I’d have been devoured ages ago!!

Fantastic….at long last. I too have prayed for these to come back. They were my favourite when I was a kid. I too used to dig them out of the Revels packs. I have just devoured a full packet and I am NOT a chocoholic! I remember them being smaller and also remember the Giraffe. Please bring him back too

I remember counters as a young child in the 70′s and thought it must have been a dream as no-one else can remember them. White packet with a camel on. They really do taste the same as they did thiry odd years ago!

I thought the same thing, there is no ‘Supposedly’ about it, they WERE available from the 60′s until approximately 1982/3, I’m just old enough to remember them, used to pester my mum for a bag when we’d be in the newsagents! Need to see if they’re as good as they tasted back then!

I still have the pink and blue striped toy cat which I do actually remember arriving in the post, after sending the tokens from the Galaxy Counters bag. I’m 48. Clearly it was a life-changing moment in my life.
