Hotel Chocolat Creamed Caramel Chunky Chocolate Egg

I don’t know too many Matts, but Matt from Hotel Chocolat has to be my favourite Matt. Every month a box appears on my doorstep without fail, and this month inside that box was this large easter egg. Lovely stuff.

The box has a light and dark clash, on one side it’s white, and on the other it’s black, I’m not entirely sure why as this is all milk chocolate so there’s nothing insinuating a clash of dark and light, but it looks pretty so it doesn’t matter.

Inside the large, rectangular box is a fairly standard sized milk chocolate egg with some lovely ectched patterns. As soon as I opened the box a smell of sweet, milky caramel hit my nostrils. I’m a huge fan of caramel when it’s done right, as in when you can really taste it. I get the feeling I’m really going to be able to taste it here.

There’s also a box of “melt-in-the-mouth caramels” that come with the egg, which is said to be caramel milk chocolate. And caramel milk chocolate it is. I’m not sure what the process is to make these but they’ve definitely gave the egg a very strong, caramel taste without any sign of caramel there, and it’s absolutely declicious. Definitely one of the most inventive and best tasting easter eggs I’ve ever had.

The box of caramels though was an amazing bonus. Inside the plain looking box was a small tray with six little caramels housed within. Well, seven technically, as there were two tiny caramel baby truffles. Some of these are quite truffley, such as the Pecan Praline, but some are very liquidy such as the Caramel Baby Truffles. One or two of the chocolates tasted more boozy than caramelly, but they were all so good that it didn’t really matter. Every one of them was rich and chocolatey, and mainly creamy. I highly recommend this easter egg if you’ve got the money to spare, it’s just a level above the rest.

Oh man this sounds soooo good – but I don’t know it would survive being shipped to NZ :(

anabels – It is a pretty thick egg, I’m sure it could survive a lot, though a trip around the world could be just a bit too much for it.

Terry, I bet Hotel Chocolat would love you even more if you included a link to where people could buy the wonderful things you review. Like so:

Who knows, maybe they’ll love me too, and send me one!
