Chocaid Fairtrade Organic Milk Chocolate

I’ve never had a bar of chocolate openly dare me to buy it before, but of all the bars to do so, this one from Chocaid did. On the front of the wrapper is the message ‘We Save the Children. Will you?’ and they also say ‘Go on. Be an angel…’ I mean, c’mon! Talk about preying on my conscience here. Now I don’t have one, but this bar was being discontinued, and that’s really the only reason I figured I’d get it.

I think this is the first ever bar I’ve had that’s certified both organic AND fairtrade. Another thing that’s cool, to me anyway, is that they’re based in Moulton Park in Northampton, which is down the road from the University I went to. Kinda reminds me of my slightly odd liking of Canderel because they’re from my hometown.

The bar is actually made in Germany though, which seems like a lot of effort. 10p of every bar sold is donated to the Save the Children charity as well, so that’s nice. So not only is it fairtrade and organic, but the bar also donates to charity. What a shame that it’s being discontinued then.

The bar itself is a fairly standard milk chocolate slab. It comes in a paper wrapper of course and within that is the foil wrapper. The chocolate itself looks and tastes quite plain. For a 35% milk chocolate bar it has a bit of a snap to it, and is a lot less creamy than I expected it to be, especially for a bar made in Germany.

The overall taste is fairly average, somewhat below. For £1.49 I felt a bit ripped off, but I was paying mainly for the fairtrade, organic and charity aspects of the bar and as such I’m not too disappointed. Despite all that goodness though it’s just not worth buying again, one because it’s not gonna be around for much longer, and two because it just wasn’t that great. Sorry guys.

What a disappointment as the cause sounds worthy. There are plenty of tasty fairtrade chocolate alternatives that they could have gone with. Devine chocolate comes to mind. Thanks for the review.
