Duc d’O Belgian Truffles

I found these hidden away in a corner in my local Tesco, and for only 99p I figured “well, why not?”
This little box, which looks quite nice, has “5 fine Belgian flaked truffles”. The ingredients are in a hell of a lot of languages but none of them are English, which is really weird and really unhelpful considering which country I live in and which country I bought them in, ah well. Inside the white cardboard box, which has pictures of the truffles on that stand out from the box (literally), is a plastic tray with five of these truffles sitting in.
The truffles look really weird. Flaked is definitely a word for them, they really just look kinda awful. Inside the flaked chocolate shell is a creamy mousse-like thing. It’s not got much of a taste to it, it’s light and chocolatey, and it actually has a bit of a cold and fresh feeling to it. It’s not bad, just not that great. I guess at 99p for the box these are quite fairly priced. They’re worth a try if you’re in the mood for some fairly cheap Belgian chocolate I suppose, but I’ve never had that mood myself.

Someone gave me a box of these as a gift and my initial reaction was, unfortunately, that they looked like goose turds. This only seemed to be reinforced by the name Duc d’O (duck do, analogous to doggy do? I hoped not).
Fighting my initial prejudices, I eventually tasted them and found they were fairly bland. Was able to consume the whole box without ill effect, so maybe they have their uses (richer chocolate can be sickening if consumed in large quantities). So, all in all, not bad for the price. But why can’t I shake the feeling that we are having the piss taken out of us by some Belgian marketing team…
Regards, Ernie.

I thought they were a gift? Or is this some sort of subtle ironic humour?

I love dark chocolate truffles and I am always trying different brands. I just found a 4oz box at my local TJ Max. They were on sale for $4. I tried my first one and was in heaven. They are not the most visually appealing, but they taste sensational. Not too bitter and not too sweet.
