Cote d’Or 86% Dark Experiences

Quite awhile ago now I reviewed two Cote d’Or bars, mentioning that they were two purchases out of three, and three months later here we have our third. The fact that I left it for so long says a lot about how little I’ve been looking forward to actually reviewing this.

This bar is described on the front as “elegant and full bodied”, and then on the back as “elegant and rich”. They also spout a whole bunch of nonsense about the polyphenols in dark chocolate, eating three squares of this bar provides you with 55% of the daily amount required to have an antioxidant effect. They then tell you to enjoy in moderation. As if.

So, an 86% cocoa solids bar, nothing else to it really. This is obviously very dark and very rich. With no other flavours I’m not sure what I’ll make of this, let’s see how eating it in moderation goes.

So I pop a piece on my tongue and instantly I’m hit with bitterness, there’s absolutely no notes of sugar here. As it starts to melt I’m sure it gets spicy for just a split second, though I may have been wrong there. It tastes a little fruity, and very smoky. This flavour continues through the rest of the bar as it very slowly melts. Even until the end there is not a hint of sweetness, it’s all very dark indeed.

I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed this bar. It all depends on subtle flavours coming out, rather than smashing your taste buds with sweet or sour notes or a big flavour. It’s almost strange eating something that has no real effect on my tongue, but as I mentioned, it relies completely on flavour. It makes a very welcome change though, and dark chocolate lovers might be able to appreciate this even more than I did.
