Divine Mini Chocolate Brownies

August 6th, 2008 by Terry

So my friends at Divine appreciated my honesty regarding their strawberries and cream bar and didn’t blacklist me, instead asking if I was interested in three of their latest chocolate bakery range products. As if I even needed to be asked, and so here we are with review one of three - mini chocolate brownies made from 70% dark chocolate.

These are mini versions of their well…normal sized range, which I have honestly never seen. From the leaflet I was given it seems as though these are a Waitrose only product but I could be wrong. One fact about Divine I found interesting is that they actually have 45,000 cocoa farmers who make up the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative, who produce the cocoa they use, that’s a lot of people!

They describe their Brownies as having been created using an American-style recipe which makes their outside crumbly and their inside fudgy. Each pack contains six brownies, and in case you were wondering there is no fudge in these…sadly.

The shelf life is fairly decent, I’m sure these were straight from the factory and they were best before 26th September, so that’s about 6 weeks. The packet is nice, it follows with Divine’s general pattern as well as having a clear section so you can see what the brownies look like. Alright, enough already, let’s taste these things.

Each brownie is pretty much bitesize. Considering they’re made from 70% dark chocolate I was a bit cautious about just chomping them, but went for it anyway. As it turns out they don’t taste dark at all. They’re definitely crunchy on the outside though they’re more cakey on the inside, is that the same as fudgey? You be the judge. The brownies have little chocolate chips inside which I assume can melt in your mouth, though they weren’t in mine long enough to do so.

As nice as these are, and trust me, they are nice, they suffer from a cakey aftertaste. Some of you will hopefully know what I’m talking about. You eat a nice cake, then you just sort of get a strange aftertaste in your mouth, you can’t quite put your finger on it, but it’s…cakey. These have that aftertaste. There’s a really nice cocoa flavour here though that goes well in brownie form. Honestly I don’t think I would buy these for £1.99 a pack (that’s their RRP), but if they were on a special offer then you could do much worse. If you’re ever in a Waitrose, these are worth a look.

P.S. one thing that bugged me was that they give the nutritional information per 100g, yet don’t say how much the bag weighs. Should I be getting my weighing scales out then? Come on guys it’s not hard, either do it per brownie or tell us how much the pack weighs.

I know the aftertaste you mean. Almost like a slightly dusty floury taste. And I HATE when nutritional info is by the 100g. Especially when you don’t know how much the bloody thing weighs itself.
