Enric Rovira’s Rajoles 40% Milk Chocolate Bar
Enric Rovira is a Spanish chocolatier who “incorporates the artistic and contemporary vibe of Barcelona” in his chocolate…supposedly. Rajoles is the Catalan word for both floor tile and chocolate bar, and so it’s no coincidence that these bars are flat and square shaped, like, well…a floor tile.
There are four bars in the Rajoles range, with this, a 100% cocoa bar (another time, perhaps…never), an 80% cocoa bar and a white chocolate bar. I only have this bar. So what do they say about it? Well, here goes. “Caramel, toffee and all things caramelised and sweet. Very little malt flavour.” Hmm, I do have quite the sweet tooth which would perhaps explain this website and why I paid £2 for this bar (discounted from its usual £3.15 RRP), so here goes.
The box looks ok, it has a pattern to it, no doubt a floor tile style, very clever eh? Oh Enric Rovira, you old dog! The ingredients please me, there are only five of them - cocoa, sugar, powdered milk, vanilla and lecithin in that order. He has his address on the back too, in case you want to pay him a visit, I’ve heard he’s very inviting.
Box open, chocolate out and-oh. What’s this? A plastic wrapper? Well now that’s disappointing, I was used to gold foil, damn you Valrhona for spoiling me! It has that same floor tile design etched into the chocolate as well. Now, I like you and all, Enric, but you’re pushing the joke a little bit, and I swear if this bar actually has bits of floor tile mixed into it, I will be paying you a personal visit. I also have your number (again, printed on the back of the box).
So, the taste. Well, I think Enric saw me coming. This bar is so plain, so plain. When it melts there are some nice flavours that come through, though no caramel or toffee, just relatively ordinary milk chocolate. When bitten there is literally no taste at all, which is something that cheap chocolate can manage. Overall, very disappointing, next time I’m in Barcelona I’ll pay Enric a visit, and then he can pay me back. With more chocolate.

The pattern used on the chocolate is a common pattern of sidewalk tiles in Barcelona.

suggestion: you have to try Rovira’s rajoles 80% plain and with chilly . . !!!
. . starting with a . . 40% milk “chocolate” review without including or saying at least something about his other creations is not fair for Enric’s creativity. .

Actually I rate Rovia’s Rajoles (Rajoles is the name of these patterned tiles of Barcelona) 40% as one of my favourite 2 milk chocolates in the world (the other being the very unique Pralus Melissa mmmm!) The taste is very fun, yet had character: caramel, sweet milk, smooth. I have given this chocolate to other people who just say it tasted like any other milk choc though, so I guess I have sensitive taste buds. Also worth trying is Rovia’s around the world selection which includes amazing salt dusted chocolate coated macadamias.
