Mars Dark Chocolate M&M’s
Something that I’m surprised hasn’t made it to Britain is this packet of dark chocolate M&M’s from Mars of America. I have here the standard 47.9g (1.69oz) bag, just enough for a single serving. With its attractive purple packet, I’m quite looking forward to these.
Wait, what’s that? It doesn’t say anywhere on the pack the amount of cocoa solids in these? You mean I can’t tell how dark they are or even if they’re dark at all and have to just take Mars’ word for it? Oh, ok then, well there goes my enthusiasm.
Well anyway, opening the pack and pouring out a few M&M’s reveals that these are the size of regular M&M’s, same colour, same looks, same everything. Oh yeah, the taste, I almost forgot about that there.
Well, they taste kinda dark. Certainly not like milk chocolate, but very sweet, though it does have that dark chocolate taste. The chocolate inside is noticeably darker than normal, so I guess with a darker chocolate and a dark taste, these really are dark chocolate M&M’s.
These are no doubt about as low in terms of cocoa solids as dark chocolate can get. The only thing dark about them is the taste, and only just. I guess I enjoyed these, they’re like miniature spheres of dark chocolate, in the normal tasteless M&M candy shell. There’s plenty in the standard bag to satisfy you (or there were to satisfy me, anyway).
I don’t think these could be improved much, or how they could be improved, but I feel like they should be, they’re good but not great. Each bag has 240 calories (100 from fat), 2g Protein, 33g Carbohydrates (27g of which sugars) and 11g Fat (7g of which saturates).

When I tried these I had pretty much the same thoughts as you. I think they just played it on the safe side by aiming their cocoa levels as slightly more than normal but not enough to alienate people with a taste thats too harsh….they arent the best but are hardly anything fowl!
