Cote d’Or Banana

June 10th, 2008 by Terry

So I was complaining in my Cavalier bar review I had never really had Belgian chocolate from Belgium before, but here we are again with a Cote d’Or bar, made in Belgium, sold in Belgium.

It’s a regular Cote d’Or bar, not that you or I may know, they actually have a lot in this range, I just happened to get the banana fondant one, which is great because I really don’t like the idea of banana fondant and chocolate.

The packaging is quite nice, they’re not hiding the fact that this is banana based. Pictures of banana slices on the front with the Cote d’Or bar oozing yellow cream, it reminds me of the Dairy Milk packaging, only a lot better. There’s not much else to say except that Cote d’Or are owned by Kraft in case you weren’t aware (I wasn’t), not that it really makes a difference. They also have “Single” printed on the wrapper, suggesting that this comes in a larger format.

It was getting a bit late as I took these photos so I couldn’t get any good light, but the fondant is a light yellow, or a dark white depending on how you look at it (I’ll go with light yellow, dark white doesn’t make much sense). The bar has six chunky pieces, each being solid milk chocolate with the fondant, simple. The chocolate is quite thick, and in some aspects too thick, as it overrides the fondant flavour most of the time, which is actually surprisingly pleasant.

It tastes somewhat artificial, both the chocolate and the fondant have slightly odd tastes to them, and I don’t think the balance is quite right with this bar. Overall impression is that it’s decent, and it’s an interesting idea, but it needs tweaking, I’d still recommend trying it if you get the chance though. I’ll certainly be looking for other bars in this selection at some point in the future.

Each 47.5g bar has 215 calories, 2.2g Protein, 32g Carbohydrates and 8.6g Fat.

Ellie - I used to have a fear of bananas when I was younger, kinda over it but I’m still not that fond of them. Banana fondant just seems so wrong though, doesn’t it?

It’s basically baby food in a chocolate bar.

Ellie - What’s not to like about that! Actually isn’t there a type of baby food that everyone likes, I think they’re called Farmer’s Rusks or something, they should combine that with chocolate.
