Canderel Silky Milk Chocolate

Canderel are known for their sugar-substitute sweeteners, but awhile ago they branched out into chocolate manufacturing with two bars, a milk chocolate bar and a dark chocolate bar. Simple enough, right?

I’ve always had a soft spot for them as a company for the simple reason that their headquarters are in my hometown (hopefully at least one of you has a similar situation going on and know what I mean), but I’m not convinced this was the best business move for them. Obviously the bar uses their sweeteners (maltitol and aspartame) and those are the number one ingredients.

For a 100g bar it looks quite small, but what it is is very thick as you can see in the picture above. The bar came all cracked up but I’m used to it from internet shopping, and I guess it saves me the effort of breaking it, so getting to the taste…

Well, it reminds me of the Cavalier bar. It’s sad that the removal of sugar has such an obvious effect on the taste of chocolate, or at least this chocolate. Sweeteners are just nowhere near the same, it loses its sweet, creamy flavour completely, and is replaced with a bland, flat chocolate flavour.

It’s edible, but to be fair not much more than that. It’s just so plain, boring and tasteless, it’s milk chocolate without any milky or sweet taste, and it’s disappointingly bland. Only recommended for the carb/sugar conscious. Each 100g bar has 445 calories, 9g Protein, 43g Carbohydrates (11.4g of which sugars) and 31g Fat (18.9g of which saturates).

    Hey, I just thought I’d point out that this kind of ’sugar-free’ or ’sugar reduced’ chocolate is not deemed to be any better for diabetics than regular chocolate. Also, the sweeteners they use can have a laxative effect when eaten in excess… And, as you’ve stated, it tastes gross! :-)
