Mars Dark Maltesers

May 14th, 2008 by Terry

Another Australian product here, and another one that I’m surprised we don’t have here. Maltesers are a popular product, but I guess Mars don’t think making them in a dark chocolate variety would appeal to most people. Shrug.

So for anyone who doesn’t know, Maltesers are little balls of malt honeycomb, covered with a thin layer of what’s normally milk chocolate, but dark chocolate in this case. I’ve never been the biggest fan of them, as I find the texture to be a bit weird, but there we are.

It says on the back that the dark chocolate is minimum 38% cocoa solids, which is disturbingly low for a dark chocolate product, and that’s how they taste too.

There’s a dark chocolate flavour, no doubt about it, these are dark chocolate Maltesers. But only just, this is pretty much about as low as dark chocolate can get, with a bit of the flavour and absolutely nothing else to it.

They’re nice, and to be fair it does suit them well, but I don’t think these have lived up to their potential, which seems like an odd thing to say.

I could see these coming over here eventually, with the dark chocolate market growing. The dark chocolate Kit Kat has done a good job since it was introduced, so it would make sense to me. As for importing, I don’t think it’s worth the effort unless you really want to try these.

Aren’t Maltesers made by Mars, not Cadbury? Or is it different in Australia (though I wouldn’t have thought so)?

Was recently in Hong Kong where I purchased DARK maltesers, absolutely fabulous as I prefer dark chocolate. I have been buying Maltesers for over 50 years, but the dark one are the BEST. Do I need another trip to H.K or can I purchase them here in Oz.
    Regards Jeanie

My daughter who lives in Hong Kong could not believe that we can’t buy dark chocolate maltesers and has promised to bring some with her when she next visits.
