Nabisco Oreos (Revisited)

May 6th, 2008 by Terry

I like revisiting things I’ve reviewed every so often, usually when they’ve been repackaged, to see if anything has changed. With Oreos recently launched officially by Nabisco in Britain, I figured this would be a perfect chance to check them out again.

First off, I’m not sure if this will be a good idea. Oreos sell well in import shops, sure, but as for mass production in supermarkets, I’m not convinced. I paid 75p for this 165g pack though which is about normal for a pack of biscuits, so there’s hope yet. This pack was only made not even 2 months ago, so I’m sure they’re fresh.

I was less than impressed with the American Oreos, I found them to be plain, and devoid of any real good, rich flavour. They’re chocolate discs with a vanilla creme flavouring in the middle, somewhat akin to our English Bourbon Cream biscuits, except they have a chocolate creme. They also use the same eating message which they do in America - Twist, Lick, Dunk (in milk), not something I’ll be doing, but perhaps it makes a difference.

And so, that is what we have inside the packet. 14 Oreo biscuits, these are actually produced in Cheltenham too, so they’re not being shipped over from some factory, which is something I like. But, onto the biscuits themselves. Again, I feel like I’m eating a bourbon cream, only with an ever so slightly different flavour, which would of course be the vanilla cream.

These don’t taste as dry as the American ones, maybe it’s because they’re a bit fresher, as I doubt they’ve changed anything in terms of ingredients for us (except for the use of actual sugar, perhaps). They’re nice, no doubt about it, but they’re just a bit plain, and lacking that something special that makes me want to come back for more.

they have only just become available? i thought they had been in the supermarkets for a few years? they have been in available hher widely for a good while but i’m not sure where the ones in the supermarket here are manufactured.

Personally I adore Oreos. Especially since they’ve started smothering them in milk chocolate. In the states they’ve also started making mint chocolate covered oreos which are sinful.

OK. I need to go get me some oreos.

The use of actual sugar versus the high fructose corn syrup in the American ones probably does make them taste better. Ask any Canadian; the Oreos are better here than in the States. The ingredients *are* different.

Ellie - These are now being made, advertised and sold in England properly, as part of an official business plan from Nabisco. The imported ones I had before that I got from my campus shop were from Mexico I think, maybe someone in America can confirm where some of the factories are, and I wouldn’t know if you had things different over in Ireland.

An Cailin - That’s the thing, you get more varieties, and we essentially have these already, just with a different name. We simply have better biscuits, nothing wrong with Oreos, they’re just not all that great.

Tara - I would assume so, as I said these are made in England so they’ll use sugar rather than that other rubbish, and like you I assume it makes them taste slightly better.

i shall do some crafty research about the origin of the oreos available in ireland. ie. i’ll er..look at the back of the packet next time i’m in the supermarket. on the topic of oreos - on the candy blog someone mentioned deep-fried oreos being common where they live somewhere in the states, done the same way as mars bars over this part of the world. i can’t really imagine what that would taste like.

Yeah, look at the back of the pack, in the supermarket, then watch as it accidentally falls into your basket. To be honest, that sounds disgusting, I’m not a fan of deep fried anything, my body weeps at the thought of even trying it.
