Niederegger Filled Chocolate Eggs Selection

April 24th, 2008 by Terry

Yeah, it’s a bit lame these have the same name as the other filled chocolate eggs (as in, the exact same title is printed on the box), so I added “selection” to the end and was happy with that. As you can see we have a pretty little box here with three different eggs inside, each slightly bigger than what a Creme Egg is.

The three chocolate eggs from left to right are - Nuss Pastete, Ananas Pastete and Aprikosen Pastete. Now my German is rusty but I guessed that we had banana and apricot, with Nuss being a mystery flavour. I decided against actually researching the translations before eating these, preferring the mystery instead.

Nuss Pastete was a 50g egg, with 51% cocoa solids, and a marzipan filling. I struggled to identify any flavours except huge bits of nut, and an extremely strong alcohol taste. So when I did find the translation, it turned out to be nut flavour. I found this to be pleasant, but lacking a real defining flavour.

Ananas, as it turns out, is actually pineapple, which I could tell as soon as I bit into this. Again there’s a really strong alcohol taste which makes my face wince slightly, and the eggs are filled to the brim with the odd looking marzipan paste. Not a bad flavour, but very overpowering.

Aprikosen is indeed apricot, and it uses 52% cocoa solids. Now I actually got a large amount of paste on my tongue here, and it hurt due to the alcohol. I also ate this egg vertically, and as I bit half of it off, this sticky, runny, almost water like liquid dripped out of it onto my shirt and fingers, not very pleasant at all.

Overall, I’m not sure about these. They’re all nice, but I don’t see why the alcohol is there, it’s overpowering, and this is coming from someone who’s used to the stuff. The runny liquid is…pretty disgusting, really, but they all tasted nice. Stick to the marzipan loaves, methinks, this is a bridge too far.

My overall impression of Niederegger though is extremely positive. They’re a company who takes pride in themselves, and their German heritage shows with their products. I always say the little things count, and even things like having tape that splits off easily on all their products makes my life that little bit easier, and things like that are noticed. I highly recommend them to anyone who likes marzipan and wants to try something a little bit special.
