Hotel Chocolat’s Your Eggsellency

Your Eggsellency, the king of the easter eggs, that is no doubt the idea behind this. Let’s take a look at what we have here - “Half the egg is made from 72% dark chocolate, the other from 40% milk chocolate,. Filled with cream truffle eggs made with champagne, bellini, tiramisu, kirsch, amaretto and more”. If that doesn’t sound incredible to you, then I wonder what you’re doing here.
So, the appearance. Well, it comes in a pretty stylish box like no supermarket easter egg. It looks almost like a black shoe box, only smaller and a hell of a lot prettier. Suitable for vegetarians, but with milk, soya, eggs, nuts and alcohol. Looks like there’s a bit of everything in here. So you peel a bit of tape off, and the label comes off and then the lid too. Inside is their high quality card showing what’s on offer in the box, and then one final barrier preventing you from your prize, as you can see in the picture below.

I like the keyhole design, it’s like you’re peeking into a room full of goodies, and the card showing what’s inside is amazing, but let’s not spoil that, eh? So away comes our last barrier and we are left with the crown jewels: two individually foil wrapped half eggs filled with wrapped truffles. Even from inside the foil I can see these egg halves are extremely thick, a completely different class to anything I’ve had before (including the Thorntons egg).
A slight let down, and it’s very slight, is that I don’t know which half is which until I open them up, as there’s nothing on the foil to say. Removing the packet of truffles shows that the eggs aren’t wrapped the entire way, just halfway, and the truffles cover the rest. Disappointing? A little, the chocolate was cracked in places and looked a little jarred from the journey, it’s no biggie though.

One of my eggs as you can see above fell to pieces as soon as I opened it, the dark chocolate one stayed ok, as you can see they are extremely thick. The truffles as I mentioned came in little bags, but I opened them for the purpose of the picture. Both the eggs taste amazing, they are made from Hotel Chocolat’s ordinary chocolate, but they’re so thick and rich it’s almost unreal. The dark chocolate half was almost too much for me, in some places I found it to be too thick and too rich, but faultless other than that.
And the truffles for the most part are quite excellent. There’s a few which are ok at best, mainly the dark chocolate ones which had some overly rich fillings. The Marc de Champagne was one I was looking forward to yet in the end I really didn’t like it. The Rum and Whisky truffles (those are seperate) were both far too rich for me, as they were in dark chocolate shells, with a chocolate filling. The rest were very nice though.
Overall, an extremely luxurious egg. I don’t recommend getting this for the kids, this is for your own eggsellency, that special someone in your life. P.S. Apologies for the really amateurish photos, I have no space in my dorm for anything. :\
