Vosges Exotic Caramels

A huge box of exotic caramels here. I also got sent a smaller box but considering that this contains all those flavours, plus more, I decided to just share that out and review this instead. The box is extremely pretty, with a ribbon on the side that has to be undone in order for it to be opened.

The round box then splits in half, revealing the two layers to this. All the flavours are listed around the side of the box, as well as being on seperate sheets inside each selection pack.

There are 9 different caramels here, the same flavours being on both levels, so I will give these specific reviews. First off, Vosges take a lot of effort with ensuring these are kept as fresh as possible, what with all their wrapping, and it certainly helps as the chocolate here is incredibly soft and well made, nothing stale at all.

Sunshine – Honey caramel covered in chocolate with spice rubbed corn on the cob on top. A tougher caramel than most of the others, this one seems to be lacking in any clear flavour. The corn doesn’t add as much as I would have expected, and it seems to be a relatively…plain tasting honey caramel.

Maple – Maple caramel with Candian maple-cured bacon. Oh my, this sounds weird. Again though, I’m struggling to pick up much of anything, I let it melt in my mouth and I’m still getting exactly the same strong caramel taste I got in the previous one. I’m getting a little confused here…there’s no maple or bacon taste at all.

Lerde – Caramel with a shot of Mezcal, with chillies and licorice root. I felt the chillies this time as it went down my throat, but once again it lacks defining flavour. The pumpkin seed on the top adds nothing more than making this look pretty.

Blush – Hawaiian red sea salt, milk chocolate and li hing powder. The salt can definitely be felt with this one, it’s a definite mix of sweet and salty. A plain taste again, but an interesting combination of flavours here.

Tart – Blood orange, Campari, dark chocolate and hibiscus powder. Finally something I can taste! The caramel is dusted with the hibiscus powder which is quite bitter, and the tart flavour of the blood orange really stands out here. Definitely my favourite thus far, a nice, orangey caramel.

Leather – Brazil nuts, South American cocoa nibs and dark chocolate. The brazil nuts are on top of the caramel, and the cocoa nibs add a definite chocolate taste to this caramel, which for once isn’t the defining flavour. Not as nutty as I’d hoped, but quite chocolatety and pleasant.

Rosey – Rose water, pink peppercorns, dark chocolate and rose water petal. A very strange tasting caramel, and honestly I didn’t like it at all. I think it’s the rose water, it just doesn’t combine very well with the peppercorns and creates a weird flavour. Not recommended.

Crema – Argentine dulce de leche, Costa Rican cashew and milk chocolate. Soft, creamy and covered in nuts, one of the best so far. A gentle flavour, nothing stands out too much but it’s very pleasant.

Leaf – Aboriginal anise myrtle and dark chocolate. What a strange combination! Caramel, aniseed and dark chocolate, even as an aniseed fan I didn’t particularly like this, the aniseed was different to any type I’ve had before and it was too strange a combination for my liking.

Overall, disappointing. These are all exotic sounding, but a lot of them taste similar, and the ones with a lot of taste to them are generally not that good (Leaf and Rosey for example). It’s an interesting experience, but I’m unsure of whether to recommend these or not. If you want to try something new, then go for it, otherwise you may find your taste buds extremely confused by this box.
