Cadbury Wispa

Yeah, that’s right, I’m reviewing this bar first! The Wispa is back and we got a shipment in at work today, they’re selling like hotcakes and I got first dibs. The fabled bar has had many people weeping after its demise, and after a hell of a lot of pressure, Cadbury’s have finally brought it back.

Looking at the pack, it’s as if the bar never left. The same blue packaging, with ‘Wispa’ in big, bubbly red font. The same slogan – ‘Aerated Milk Chocolate Bar’ – on the sides of the packet, and the massive waves of nostalgia when you pick it up. I almost didn’t want to eat it, I was afraid that it would all go wrong, that I’d taste it and find that it tasted bad or different to how I remember and that all my memories would be dashed. Fortunately, it didn’t…

Let’s not go overboard though, Wispa wasn’t the best bar around when it was on the market, and it isn’t now. The thing that annoyed me was that Cadbury got rid of it in order to bring in their Dairy Milk range, this one being ‘Dairy Milk Bubbly’, which just isn’t the same as a Wispa. This is Cadbury’s answer to an Aero, and at the risk of offending many of my readers, I still think the Aero is better.

They’re different sorts of bars though, the Wispa is a long, thick milk chocolate bar that happens to be bubbly, whilst the Aero is much more bubbly, crumbly and I think the chocolate is of a better quality. The Wispa, I found, was very average. You don’t know how much I really wanted to like this, I was desperate to put an awesome review of it up, but it is in the end, decidedly average tasting. It’s not bad at all, it’s basically how I remember it tasting.

I didn’t buy it much when it was out before, and according to Cadbury’s not many people did which is why it was cut, and I can see why. I predict awesome sales for the first month or two, but whether Cadbury’s make it a permanent fixture (it’s limited edition at the moment) is up for debate, and when the hype around it dies down, I’m just not sure if it will make it. That aside, surely it would sell more than some of the other Cadbury products…

The bar has 210 calories, 2.7g Protein, 21.2g Carbohydrates (21.1g of which sugars) and 12.9g Fat (8.1g of which saturates). Please don’t lynch me for my opinion.

WHOOO!!! wispa!! these chocolate coincidences are beginning to freak me out because i literally just bought one on the way home from college and came on here. i saw it in the shop and nearly said “YAY!!!” out loud – cringe. and they don’t seem to be any smaller than before. and they are indeed MUCH nicer than the dairymilk bubby. just off to scoff the rest of this baby. (baby as in wispa, not an actual baby :/

The problem is that the Wispa used to be so much better when it was bigger (as it was throughout the ’80s, I believe). Then they decided to make it thinner, and it just didn’t taste as good. It’s amazing what an extra bit of thickness can do to the taste of a bar. So yeah, it’s a decent chocolate bar, but sadly a shadow of its REAL, original self.

Kinda like how Monster Munch used to be bigger, and made in a totally different way than the crumbly little things that exist now.

I guess the good thing about not growing up in the 80s is that I don’t experience such disappointments then, otherwise this review could have been even worse. ;)

ellie – Have there not been anymore coincidences then? We were on a little roll when I put this review out.

Oh my goodness, when I was a little kid in the 80′s the wispa was my most favourite chocolate bar. When they introduced the dairy milk bubbly range to replace it I was so distraught. I always wanted them to bring back the Wispa and when they did I was sooooo pleased, its my still my fav. I cant even say why its so good, i just love it!
