Nestlé Lion Bar

The Lion bar is a relatively old chocolate, made back in the 70s by Rowntree before they were taken over by Nestlé. In today’s age the bar is supposedly not as popular nowadays, and it’s my mission to try and work out why this is.

The Lion bar is a manly bar, it’s high in calories and it has a picture of a lion’s roaring face on the front. It’s an angry bar and it seems this doesn’t fit well with today’s womanly Galaxy bars and low calorie Highlights bars.

I would say it’s a shame, but after tasting the bar I’m not so sure. The bar is a big mash of wafer, caramel and puffed rice. It seems like it could be good, very good in fact, if it added peanuts, peanut butter or…just something else basically. As it is it’s quite plain, but just one little addition could change so much…

It sort of reminds me of the Cadbury Picnic (which I haven’t actually reviewed yet), which has peanuts and raisins in it as well as the wafer and caramel, and is basically the superior version of this. So despite having a fair bit of promise, ultimately this bar fails with too much wafer, too many empty calories, and there’s nothing there which makes me want to buy one again.

Each bar has 277 calories, 2.6g Protein, 35.7g Carbohydrates and 13.7g Fat.

They used to make Peanut Butter Lion Bars which were great. The softness of the peanut butter in the middle of the bar broke up its toughness, making for a superior bar for those who enjoy peanut butter. I haven’t seen any around for years though, so I expect they stopped making them.

I think they’re still around in Europe somewhere, but definitely not England. Bit of a shame really, they sound great.

lion bars back in the early 90′s were so so so soooooo good.trust me, i am a self confessed chocoholic! one of my very favorite candy bars when i was a child. so naturally i was terribly upset when they stop selling this bar from where i come from. i find it odd that you say its not as good. maybe the bar ‘then’ and the bar ‘now’ differs you know? cause i had a friend who tried the lion bar recently and she mentioned it was not as good as the one back then. sighs, this bar does brings back nostalgic memories. i wish they wld bring it back here.

Terry, i agree that this is an angry bar… but i like angry! It makes me want to tear the wrapper open like a pair of tights and then ravage the contents!

I was in the Ukraine last year and they had Lion bars and Lion bars with Peanuts. One of the best candy bars ever made. Wish I could find them in the states.
