Cadbury Dairy Milk

April 13th, 2007 by Terry

I’m surprised how long I’ve avoided this bar for. And it’s not as if I’m avoiding it on purpose, I just never notice it. This is proper British chocolate, and when I finally saw it, I decided I had to review it posthaste in order to show my nationalistic pride as a proper Englishman. This is the chocolate we’re born and bred with, and so I moved this to the front of my chocolate queue in order to get this review up.

Despite being a plain looking, and frankly, plain tasting solid milk chocolate bar, the Dairy Milk is still our best selling chocolate. Now that’s British pride for you. I was actually hoping when I saw this that it was going to be really great, that when I bit into it I was going to be flooded with nostalgia and wonderful tasting milk chocolate, but I wasn’t.

No, what I did taste was mediocre milk chocolate, and nothing else. No hazelnut cream, no peanut butter, no caramel, just chocolate. Maybe that’s why it’s popular, you know where you are with this stuff. You’re getting milk chocolate and you’ll be grateful for it. Personally, in the modern world where we can mix flavours and create wonderful new things, I don’t think this chocolate cuts the mustard anymore, but looking at the sales figures, I must be in the minority with such an opinion.

Maybe I’m spoiled, I’ve tried chocolate from many countries and tasted many things, granted I’ve only blogged for a little over a month, but I’ve eaten chocolate for years, and with my taste buds expanded, this chocolate tastes suddenly very mediocre. I’m in a definite minority when it comes to my chocolate eating habits, I’m sure that the Jones’ next door don’t get packages full of Kit Kats from Japan once a month like I seem to end up doing, and so they’ll be happy with the Dairy Milk.

I’m not though, I really want to give this a great review, I want the English flag to be flying behind me as I stand and proclaim this as a great national treasure of ours, with a tear in my eye. But I can’t when I know I’ve tasted so much better. Sorry Dairy Milk, but you’re just plain boring.

But hey, the nutritional information! Each bar only has 205 calories, 22.1g of Carbohydrates, 11.6g of Fat and 3g of Protein, so it’s not all bad! Oh I should mention those are for the standard bars of course, don’t think that you can get away with eating one of those huge bars for 200 calories, you pig.

i always find things like dairymilk, dream and galaxy etc really plain but they are absoluty divine if you melt them in the microwave for a few mins with 10grams of flora stir then break up a digestive biscuit in to medium size pieces add them to the melted chocolate stir together then shape them in a small container, place in fridge for a few hours and wahay you have my fave choco biscuit pudding creammy and lush :D :D :D :D !! ooo its nice with guylian toooo :D

  2. Terry

Wow, I’m…impressed with that recipe. If I ever want a good dessert I’ll know who to call, and if I ever decide to put recipes up on the site, I guess you’re the person to turn to as well. Excellent stuff.

  3. babycakes

you think? :) or are ya joking *laughs* :P

  4. Terry

No I’m not joking, though I was taken a bit aback when I saw that message.

  5. babycakes

taken aback how comes? *wonders hmm*

  6. Terry

It just came out of nowhere. Like I wrote this article just over 3 months ago with no comments on it, then all of a sudden you post a homemade recipe using the stuff that seems very impressive. Hence being taken aback, oh and I don’t think anyone’s posted recipes on here before, so it was quite enjoyable.

  7. babycakes

ah well its all good then :D its just the randomness in my personality shining through :D :P !

  8. babycakes

it wrks best on thick choc tho like ..areo,yorkie,dream dairymilk, guylian etc.. but soooo nice :) ;) :P

  9. Terry

Ah the randomness, eh? Well it’s fine with me, I love the comments that people give! And I can imagine it working so, so well with Guylian, oh yes…

  10. babycakes

*laughs* yep im thinking of trying it with bournville or something for a change well it gives me something to do! :D

  11. Terry

Ugh, not Bournville…you can do better than that.

As for something to do, do you really not have anything else you can do? I’m not criticising and it would be quite hypocritical if I was! But yeah…nothing else to fill your time with?

  12. babycakes

i didnt mean that its just its the summer holz (having college break) and when im having a lazy day and cant be bothered to do anything its just somethin to do *laughs* :) i dont really know what othe dark choc is around other than that :S hmm!

  13. Terry

Ohh ok then, still do you not have a job or anything to fill your time? And as for dark chocolate, there’s stuff like Green & Black’s, or Lindt, but that stuff can be expensive…so yeah, maybe you should stick with the Bourneville if you’re poor like me. :P

  14. babycakes

there isnt many jobs going near me at the mo!i dont know whether its a good or bad thing though :S :S *chuckles and sighs* :( but anyways im havin a few weeks relaxation :D nope im not sticking to bournville now *laughs* it suddenly struck me to try the small thorntons 50g milk, dark and white choc bars might have to put a bit more biscuit in because there quite thick but im not complainin yay! problem solved :P

  15. Terry

What a shame, sadly I know the feeling. Have I put you off Bourneville now? I didn’t know how powerful my opinion was! Oh the Thorntons bars…you don’t know how much I want to review those right now.

  16. babycakes

well to be honest bournville isnt that great ( its like the flake dark too tangy) but i couldnt think of any other small dark choc bars but thorntons is always great quality so im sure they are great :D i like making me own desserts and stuff as you can pick what you want yourself instead of what the shops give you! i usually do it to ice cream but i dont think you could get much better than ben and jerrys can ya? :P ooo which thorntons ones u going to review?

  17. Terry

Oh I didn’t know you needed something small. Thorntons is a good choice then. That’s a good point about making your own things, I wish I was a good enough cook to do that, I don’t think I could make ice cream better than Asda Smart Price’s ordinary vanilla, let alone Ben & Jerry’s! If you can though, then you need to come and cook for me!

As for what I’m going to review, what I have are 4 ordinary bars (Turkish Delight, White Chocolate, Capuccino and maybe…Hazelnut or something), and I have a few selection boxes as well, one is called Eden, there’s a summer mix or exotic mix or something, and one or two others. Oh and I have a Thornton’s Easter Egg! So a lot of choice, which would you like to see as I’m more than happy to do any of them. :D

  18. babycakes

well just so you know the white choc one tastes totally like a dream bar :D hmm the cappucino would be good yum yum! i like the marzipan and whipped fudge ones…well you dont have to use little bars i just use them to make a little cake if you use a full size one and more biscuits its just bigger :D :D i like to buy things then custamize them or mix things together see what happens *chuckles* i seem sad but really im not :P

  19. Terry

I’ve had the white chocolate bar before and as far as I can remember it was much better than the Dream bar is. The Marzipan one is awesome, I’m gonna get that when I got shopping next (Monday methinks). Good point with the size there, bit of a blond moment for me.

  20. babycakes

hmm maybe its because i havent had a dream bar for awhile ill have to get one when i go shoppin on sat hehe! :S i love to know what the milk and dark ones taste like though as i have never indulged in them for some reason :O *laughs* have you tried there alcohol truffles mmmm :P i was lookin forward to the college break but im actually bored *shock horror* ;)

  21. Terry

Well I would be surprised if the Thorntons bar isn’t better than Cadbury’s. Milk and Dark eh? Well I’ll put them on my list then. I haven’t tried the alcohol truffles, in fact the only thing I *have* tried from Thornton’s before is that white chocolate bar, so I’m hoping I’m in for a treat.

And tell me about being bored, I can’t find a job and seem to be spending most of my days just doing little bits of housework, playing video games and watching anime, I’m a geek anyway but this is making me get bored of my own hobbies! :(

  22. babycakes

awh! i live in bath and theres never any jobs :( its baaad i mean theres only soo many times you can go shopping and if im saying that the world has hit crisis point! ;) :P :D well i love thorntons its not the ultimate indulgence like ben and jerrys ice cream ( verrry naughty) but it is very classy! moving web sites eh ? =)

  23. Terry

Oh my, Bath eh? I know a few people from there, no comment on the area… :P

I know what you mean, strangely I like shopping (but hate spending money) and it does get a bit samey after awhile, moving away is a good thing in that aspect. Very naughty in as much as the calories eh? It’s one of those things you can’t think about or you won’t enjoy it at all. And yep, moving websites…I’m making a rather large loss in terms of money by staying here and while it of course isn’t all about the money, the fact is that at this rate I’ll run out of stuff to review and won’t have enough money to buy anything else! So I need to move in order to put ads and stuff up (only Google, nothing big) and at least try and break even.

  24. babycakes

well i figure once a week is fine to have a big treat
im one of the 1% that isnt a chav or a skater so phew
true i bet you wouldnt turn it day hehe ;)
sometime it would be good if you reviewed a ben and jerrys i love the half baked one *laughs quietly* replying from old site :S

  25. Terry

Yeah I noticed you posted that on the old site. I’m trying to get people to respond more here, hopefully there were no problems with it…

1% eh? I’ll be making sure to cross Bath of my list of places to visit then…

And of course there’s no way I’d turn it down, unless you sent me ice cream! As for reviewing it, it really does depend on if more people want it. I don’t mind branching out but originally this was made for chocolate and things similar to it. Ice cream isn’t far off, but then again Chocablog reviewed some ice cream so maybe I should as well…

These are the sorts of tough decisions I have to make everyday!

  26. babycakes

what a difficult life you lead eh? :D well chocolate ice cream is kinda chocolate.. :D ill make a big biscuit chocolate cake then and send it to you to review *jokes* nah i wouldnt say bath is a good place to visit anyways unless you like the romans and stuff which well hmm :S *chuckles* i like the blue logo-y thing at the top of the page by the way hehe! :P

  27. Terry

Indeed I do, and ice cream is kinda similar but yeah…as I say I’m undecided about whether I’m branching off yet. That sounds pretty nice actually…and I quite like history so that could be fun. Oh and thanks, I should probably change it soon but I’m so lazy…

  28. babycakes

i spose if you like history but when you hve lived here for 4 years it tends to get a bit same-ish! :) well i think it would be a good idea to review all chocolate varieties but then its what the rest of the public are after really :P …nah you aint lazy just change on occasions *laughs* like easter valentines or xmas or something :) :)

“Sorry Dairy Milk, but you’re just plain boring.” Well obviously it’s boring! It’s called Dairy Milk not Dairy Milk with an orange centre. This chocolate is meant to taste normal. In that respect the producers have achieved their goal. It’s a normal tasting chocolate for those people who won’t or can’t eat flavoured chocolate.

Personally I like Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. It is the only chocolate that melts the right way in your mouth.
